Casey Eichfeld: Paddle

A little spring training at the USNWC.

Spring training at the USNWC.

Name: Casey Eichfeld

Hometown: Drums, Pennsylvania (according to a map, doesn’t exist)

Years Paddling: 20 Years

Favorite SR Helmet: Shensu for Slalom, Standard Half Cut for rivers

Current Residence: Mount Holly, North Carolina

Hobbies: Slalom Racing, River Running, Snowboarding, Mountain Biking

Sponsorships: Shred Ready, BracaSport

Synopsis: Some may know that I am 20 years old and then you may wonder; how has he been paddling for 20 years? Well, I started my river adventures as a newborn riding in my parent’s open boats and graduated up from there. My first boat was actually purchased before my birth. My parents got very lucky that I fell in love with it, or very unlucky…. From the moment I took a paddle in my hands, I was hooked and have been paddling ever since. My parents liked to say that I had river water running through my veins. That all lead to a lot of years of training, traveling, and the always dreaded expenses.

Durango Team Trials after a successful last run!

Durango Team Trials after a successful last run!

My dream became rising to the top of the C-1 Whitewater Slalom world. From then on I took the titles of Cadet Team Champion for 5 plus years, Junior Team member for 4, and Senior Team member for the past 3 years. In that time I traveled to Europe competing and training with other athletes and learning from the best in the world. In these last few years I took some time to participate in the C-2 class with a boyhood friend, Ricky Powell. In our time as a C-2 we qualified for the senior national team 2 years. One of those years brought us all the way to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. With an unsatisfying finish, but a boat load of new experience, Ricky and I took to our separate boats. This past year I joined the Senior Team once again but in the C-1. Now it is a new year and a new season on the way. I’d like to make it a good show!

Training has brought me to the United States National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina as it has done with other slalom athletes, including some from Team Shred. There we do some of the hardest stuff we can possibly do. Racing, that is the easy part. It is the training that comes to get you! Nevertheless, we push on letting our love, determination, and need for the sport take over and drive us through the days of hard workouts and sore muscles. There is a reason we have earned the title of athletes and we train to maintain it!

Portugal 2009-World Surf Kayak Champs

Surfing kayaks is the thing that makes scense, everything else is just in the way of that perfect feeling that I get from Surf Kayaking.

Hanging out with good friends in South America

After a solid introduction into kayaking being born into a kayaking family and thrown into a kayak at the age of 4, I began surf kayaking at 15 years old. I spent a few years competing, but although doing well in both National and International competitions I have found a passion that I have to keep fueling; SURF TRAVEL

Travelling the globe with a surf kayak and scoring some of the best surf sessions with my mates is what keeps me smiling day in, day out.

Representing my home Nation at the World Champs this year was great, and finishing in third place was a fantastic result, but the next trip around the next corner is the thing that gets me excitied the most.
