| Name:
Andreas Sommer
Birthday: 21.09.1970
Home: Nepal/Germany
Favorite Shred Ready helmet and color:
Shaggy/Grey Matte
Describe the time you were most glad that you
were wearing your helmet:
Doing a portage on a steep cliff with
rope works, when a big rock (quite big in size) bounced down the
wall, crushed my helmet and left me unconscious with a big gash
in my head which needed to be stitched. Wonder what my head would’ve
looked like without SR protection. So better keep your helmet on
even while it is hot.
What person do you respect the most?
Who is your hero? Respect: Rob Lesser
and Jonas Noecker for kayaking and exploring big water long time
back. Hero: Ernest Shakleton, an amazing leader at any kind of adventure.
Who on the Shred Ready team do you most admire and why? Tommy
Hileke, lots of NRG
What movies/books/comics/TV shows, etc
are you into right now? Movies:
No time for Cinema Books: Beyond the last village
What are you listening to these days?
John Jackson, Joe Satriani
What was the best concert you attended?
AC/DC when i was 12. Lots of voltage.
What are some things that motivate you?
Good music, good friends, smiles
What sports do you enjoy watching or participating
in besides your main sport? Watching:
Rugby, MotoX
Participating: Anything that goes in or near the water.
What's the most fun you've ever had while
participating in your sport? During
a longer portage on a first descent in a remote corner of Nepal
I mispronounced dhunga (boat) with dhuunga (rock) while trying to
explain a local villager that I am carrying a boat (something he
had never seen before in his 70years of life) while he understood
rock.
The conversation really got confusing;
me not understanding why he didn’t believe that this would
be (he understood rock) floating on the water. He obviously having
his doubts that a rock would be floating (he also had never seen
plastic before). The thing got cleared when another village came
by who understood the Indian term for boat and then explained this
to the old guy.
What's the best trip you've ever been on?
In Siberia 2002, exploring new rivers,
escaping bears and wolves, lugging heavy boats, kayaking hard whitewater
and have everyone still with a laugh and a glass of vodka at camp
after long days.
What goals are you working towards right
now? Getting my kayaking better
(you never stop learning on water), build up my own company, travel
the world, write a book, write a new guidebook about Indian and
Nepalese rivers, explore new rivers….i hope they will find
some meds to keep me going for another 100 years to get it all done….
When people look at your life, how would
you like to be remembered? Never
stop trying to follow your dreams.
What do you view as your biggest accomplishment?
My family.
What advice do you have for other people
coming up in your sport? Always
believe in your own first thought.
One sentence that describes your life:
Chaos theory.
Duran Duran, Tear for Fears, Hall and Oates,
or Cindy Lauper? Why? Cindy Lauper
reminds of Madonna, reminds me of disco, reminds me of riot thus
reminds me of kayaking.
Why are athlete bios always so lame? Because
it is paper and not water.
